Apocalypse has a way of translating to “box office blowout” at theaters–think profitable flicks like 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow. But Danish auteur Lars von Trier wants to prove that the apocalypse can be minimalistic, character-driven, and subtle with his forthcoming film Melancholia. In his own words:

There is more horror in seeing a face watching the end of the world than in showing it.
